A little bit about the artist and exhibition:


Taryn Simon lived in John F Kennedy International Airport from November 16 through November 20, 2009. JFK processes more international passengers than any other airport in the United States. Contrabandincludes photographs taken 24 hours a day of over 1000 items detained or seized from passengers and express mail entering the U.S. from abroad. Over five days, in both the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Site and the U.S. Postal Service International Mail Facility, Simon documented items including counterfeit American Express travelers checks, overproof Jamaican rum, heroin, a dead hawk, an illegal Mexican passport, deer penis, purses made from endangered species, Cuban cigars, counterfeit Disney DVDs, khat, gold dust, GHB concealed as house cleaner, cow manure tooth powder, counterfeit Louis Vuitton bags, prohibited sausage, undeclared jewelry, steroids and an ostrich egg.

Garden in a Box

"An energy-efficient fridge is one thing—a fridge-sized kitchen garden is an entirely different level of eco-consciousness. The Nano garden, designed by Hyundai Engineering & Construction in South Korea, is a garden that makes it possible to grow vegetables using hydroponics and artificial light sources, eliminating the need for pesticides or sunlight. The amount of light, water and nutrients can be monitored and controlled to determine the speed of plant growth. It also works as a natural air purifier."

Ending October 11th MoMa will be displaying Matisse's Radical Invention, 1913-1917 on the 6th floor.

"In the time between Henri Matisse's (1869–1954) return from Morocco in 1913 and his departure for Nice in 1917, the artist produced some of the most demanding, experimental, and enigmatic works of his career—paintings that are abstracted and rigorously purged of descriptive detail, geometric and sharply composed, and dominated by shades of black and gray. Works from this period have typically been treated as unrelated to one another, as an aberration within the artist's development, or as a response to Cubism or World War I. Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913–1917 moves beyond the surface of these paintings to examine their physical production and the essential context of Matisse's studio practice."
